Dr. Aggarwal presents at AHA, has abstracts and posters accepted for ACC and ATS in 2020

 Internal Medicine residents Dr. Ankita Aggarwal and Dr. Anubhav Jain, shown at left, are co-authors of a poster on "Intraprocedural stent thrombosis: A case report with review of literature," presented at the American Heart Association conference this past November in Philadelphia. For the upcoming American College of Cardiology annual meeting in March, Dr. Aggarwal will present an abstract with co-authors and fellow IM residents Drs. Anubhav Jain, Kristen Hughes, Manishkumar Patel, Mulham Hamdon and Sarwan Kumar (faculty advisor) on "Comparing efficacy and safety of Verapamil versus Diltiazem in atrial fibrillation and flutter with rapid ventricular response," and is a co-author on a case, "Cardioembolic stroke in a patient with left atrial appendage occluder: A therapeutic dilemma," with IM residents Drs. Mishita Goel, Laith Al-Janabi, Anubhav Jain, and Ameer Khan. Dr. Aggarwal is also presenting a case at the ACC conference on "Pacemaker patients should be cautious accepting electric gifts from their loved ones," with Drs. Amandeep Goyal, Poonam Bhyan, and Anubhav Jain. At the upcoming American Thoracic Society annual meeting in Philadelphia, Dr. Aggarwal and IM resident co-authors Drs. Anubhav Jain, Kishan Adusumilli, Lina Masso, and Sarwan Kumar (faculty advisor) will present a poster on "Lower dose of Alteplase used for ultrasound-assisted catheter-directed thrombolysis in a high bleeding-risk patient with massive pulmonary embolism," and Drs. Aggarwal and Jain will present another poster with faculty advisor Sarwan Kumar on "Postoperative euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis."  Congratulations!

 

Internal Medicine residents present research at Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics, American Heart Association Conferences

Internal Medicine resident Dr. Ankita Aggarwal, shown at left, presented a poster on "Low dose of tissue plasminogen activator used for ultrasound-assisted catheter-directed thrombolysis for high-risk pulmonary embolism in a post-operative patient with high risk of bleeding," at the annual conference of Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) held this past September in San Francisco.  Dr. Aggarwal's co-authors are Dr. Anubhav Jain and former resident Dr. Lina Masso. Dr. Aggarwal is also co-author of a poster on "Intraprocedural stent thrombosis: A case report with review of literature," to be presented by Dr. Jain at the American Heart Association conference this November in Philadelphia.  

 

 

 

Internal Medicine residents win poster competition at the ACP-Michigan meeting

Dr. Manishkumar Patel and his co-authors won first position in the poster competition for "Process to improve cardiac telemetry use in a community hospital" at the 2019 meeting of the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Physicians this past October. This research, which is based on QI research conducted by IM residents at Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital,  is automatically selected for the national ACP meeting in 2020, to be held in Los Angeles. Dr. Patel's co-authors on this project include residents Drs. Sana Chams, Gloria Hong, Ankita Aggarwal, Jasmeet Bal, and IM faculty Drs. Vesna Tegeltija, Zain Kulairi, and Sarwan Kumar.

Dr. Thomas Chu (Dermatology) selected as a Kenneth Fields Resident Education Enrichment Program Scholar

Dr. Thomas Chu is one of only 5 Fields Scholars awarded nationwide. This program is designed to enhance the educational development of dermatology residents. In November, Dr. Chu will attend a two-day course in New York to learn advanced injection techniques to maximize safety and minimize complications. Well done!

Anesthesia residents present at the 2019 ASA meeting in Orlando

At the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) meeting, Dr. Andrew Resnick presented a poster on "Mixed ischemic and peripartum cardiomyopathy status post-cesarean section following cardiac arrest," co-authored by Program Director Dr. Sandeep Krishnan and faculty member Dr. Jennifer Henderson. Dr. Samir Patel and Dr. Peter Paik collaborated with Dr. Margaret Gall of the Children's Hospital of Michigan on a poster entitled "Recurrent dural venous thrombosis: Acute vision loss and abducens nerve palsy,"  and Dr. Patel also co-authored another on "The difficult airway algorithm: Early use of the intubating bougie," with Dr. Dominik Choromanski, also at CHM.  

FM residents have multiple presentations, roundtables accepted for 2020 STFM meeting

Internal Medicine residents' fall 2019 research presentations

American Heart Association (AHA) conference, scientific sessions

IM residents Drs. Mulham Hamdon, Lina Masso, Victoria Gonzalez, Manish Patel and Dr. Sarwan Kumar, faculty advisor, will be presenting a poster on "Fluid resuscitation in CHF patients with sepsis" at the AHA conference in Philadelphia in 2019. 

American College of Physicians (ACP) - Michigan Chapter

Michigan Family Medicine Conference & Expo

At the 2019 Michigan Family Medicine Conference & Expo last August, Dr. David Kazanowski (PGY-1) was elected a Trustee of the Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan's Board of Trustees. The conference is sponsored by the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP), the largest specialty physician association in the state (4,200 members).  Pictured above is Dr. Kazanowski, Dr. Salieha Zaheer, Family Medicine Core Faculty, and Dr. Tina Louise Tanner, former MAFP President and current Board Member.  Congratulations to Dr. Kazanowski!

 

Dr. Kevin Ginsburg publishes pathbreaking research on prostate cancer surveillance

Dr. Kevin Ginsburg (PGY-4, Urology) was first author of a study published last fall in European Urology (the top journal in the field) on the problematic aspects of active surveillance as the preferred management strategy for many men with prostate cancer.  The article, "Risk of Becoming Lost to Follow-up During Active Surveillance for Prostate Cancer," garnered much notice in the urology research community    Dr. Ginsburg collaborated with urologists at the University of Michigan and the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and drew upon research data provided by the Michigan Urologic Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MUSIC) from 44 academic and community urology practices to suggest opportunities to improve the long-term safety of active surveillance. With co-author Dr. Rohith Arcot (PGY-4, Urology), he also published "Confimatory Magnetic Resonance Imaging with or without Biopsy Impacts Decision Making in Newly Diagnosed Favorable Risk Prostate Cancer" in the Journal of Urology this past spring, which was noted on the cover of the journal as a featured article.  This past May, Dr Ginsburg collaborated with Dr. Arcot, Dr. John Cochrane (PGY-3, Urology) and Dr. Andrew Mcelroy (PGY-3, Urology) on three podium presentations at the American Urological Association Annual Conference in Chicago. The faculty mentor of Dr. Ginsburg, and all these residents, is Dr. Michael Cher, Chair of the Dept. of Urology who holds the Donald J. and Dorothy Jaffar Endowed Professorship in Urology.
 

Internal Medicine residents participate in 41st Annual SEMCME Research Forum

Internal Medicine residents participated in the 41st Annual Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education (SEMCME) Research Forum, held May 22, 2019 at the Henry Ford.  Dr. Ankita Aggarwal (PGY-2) conducted a slide presentation on "Assessing Association of Readmission Rate with Timeliness and Quality of Discharge Summaries in a Community Hospital."  Dr. Sourabh Bidhan (PGY-2) presented a poster on "Associating Mean Arterial Pressure After In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest With Neurological and Overall Outcomes." Dr. Sarwan Kumar and Dr. Mohammad Fityan were faculty co-sponsors.  Dr. Aggarwal and Dr. Fityan are pictured at the right. At the SGIM Annual Meeting in Washington this May, residents Daymon Peterson, Tanaz Salimnia, and Neeharika Ralh (pictured at left) collaborated on three posters:  "Pericarditis as a Manifestation of Granulomatosis with Polyanglitis," "Bradycardia:  The Only Parenchymal Manifestation of Rare HSV-2 Encephalitis," and "Linezolid-induced Interstitial Lung Disease."  They also had two abstracts accepted for the Hellenic Thoracic Society/CHEST Regional Congress held in Athens, Greece, on June 27-29:  "Novel Percutaneous Thrombectomy Device for PE Patients," and with resident Bernadette Schmidt, "Dynamic Transthoracic Echocardiography Guided Right Atrial Thrombectomy by Penumbra-indigo Aspiration System."  Well done!

At the 4th Annual Michigan Summit on Quality Improvement, held on May 29, 2019 in Troy, Michigan, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Transitional Year residents presented a total of 15 posters on Quality Improvement/Patient Safety and one on Resident Wellness.  Dr. Gloria Hong's poster on "Process to Improve Cardiac Telemetry Use in a Community Hospital" was selected for a special slide competition and went on to win first place.  She is pictured at right, holding the award certificate, with SEMCME staff.
